Los Angeles, California, November 8, 2024: SimInsights representatives attended the workshop titled “Placing Workers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Robotics and Automation Jobs: What Do Employers Need to Hire Confidently?” at the USC Campus. The event, sponsored by the USC Office of Research & Innovation, aimed to address the potential to meet critical workforce shortages in robotics and automation by employing and training individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The workshop highlighted the urgent need for a qualified workforce to keep pace with the increasing adoption of robotics and automation technologies in the manufacturing sector. With as many as 2.1 million manufacturing jobs projected to remain unfilled by 2030—a gap that could significantly impact the US GDP—employing nontraditional workers, such as individuals with ASD, has emerged as a promising solution. Although between 50 and 75% of the 5.6 million autistic adults in the U.S. are unemployed or underemployed, many excel in information technology roles and tasks that require precision and repetition. This creates a substantial opportunity for job creation by training people with ASD to become skilled operators of robotic systems.
The workshop served as a collaborative platform for researchers, practitioners, industry partners, and potential employers to exchange insights on the research and strategies needed to prepare and integrate people with ASD into the robotics and automation workforce.
